The key difference comes down to the screen orientation:
Vertical arcade machines feature screens that are taller than they are wide, similar to a portrait layout. Most classic titles like Pac-Man, Galaga, Frogger, and Donkey Kong were originally designed for vertical screens. These games typically use a 4-way joystick, which is ideal for simple up, down, left, and right movement.
Horizontal arcade machines have screens that are wider than they are tall, like a modern TV. Many later arcade titles—especially fighting games like Street Fighter, Mortal Kombat, and King of Fighters—were built for horizontal screens. These usually require an 8-way joystick, allowing for diagonal movements and more complex controls.
Why Does It Matter?
Choosing the right setup is important because the gameplay experience is directly tied to the orientation and controls. Playing a vertical game on a horizontal machine (or vice versa) can distort the screen and make gameplay less authentic. Likewise, using the wrong joystick type can make controls feel off or unresponsive.
In short:
If you love classic arcade hits, go with a vertical machine.
If you’re into fighting games or action titles, a horizontal machine is the better fit.
Most original arcade machines were built with a 19-inch CRT (cathode ray tube) monitor in a 4:3 aspect ratio—the classic “tube TV” style. This size and ratio were the industry standard for decades, giving games their authentic look and feel.
While CRT monitors are now obsolete, you can still achieve the same retro experience with a 19-inch LED screen in 4:3 ratio, which we offer for authentic gameplay.
We also provide larger screen options, but these will be in widescreen format (16:9) rather than the original 4:3. Unfortunately, no manufacturer produces larger 4:3 screens today, so 19 inches remains the largest authentic size available.
All of our arcade machines come fully assembled and ready to play—just plug them in and start gaming. Unlike many competitors, we do all the building right here in the USA, and every machine is backed by our 3-year warranty for peace of mind.
We’re also one of the only U.S. manufacturers that ships arcade machines completely assembled, so you don’t have to worry about putting parts together. Simply unbox, plug in, and enjoy.
